Guidance for newly convened councils

A circular has been issued by the Dept. of the Environment with some reminders regarding the first annual meetings of councils after the elections, based on the Local Government Act 2001. The first business of the meeting is to elect a Cathaoirleach and Leas Cathaoirleach. This procedure is then followed by nominations to other committees (including for example the ACCC). However the Council may agree to adjourn such nominations to a subsequent meeting. The circular urges council officials to supply incoming members with practical information, booklets and briefings on the role and procedures of the new council …. Joint Policing Committees – re-election

The Joint Police Committees have been one of the major innovations of the past term giving councillors access to Gardai , and vice versa, so that common problems can be discussed. A Circular LG 9/09 has issued from the Dept  on the process for convening the new JPCs after the elections.   ….. Click link for text of LG9/09.
