New leader for ACCC
Waterford City Councillor Hilary Quinlan has been elected head of the Association of County and City Councils in Ireland. At the Association's AGM Cllr Quinlan was elected President by councillors from all of the thirty-four county and city councils in the State. "We are facing into the biggest changes in local government in a century" said Cllr Quinlan on taking office " I want to make the sure that the voice of councillors is heard in any debate about change in local democracy."
The Association of County & City Councils is a representative network for the almost 883 councillors who comprise the elected bodies of the 34 county and city councils in the State. The Association identifies and responds to new policy issues which might impact on the local government sector.
With over twenty-five years service on Waterford City Council, Cllr Quinlan is prominent in local government circles throughout Ireland. He brings to his new role a wealth of experience gained from serving three times as Mayor of the Waterford City Council as well as leadership positions on the South Eastern Health Forum and the Joint Policing Committee.
First elected to Waterford City Council in 1985 Cllr. Quinlan has retained his seat in four subsequent local elections making him one of the most experienced councillors in the country. His term as Chair of Waterford's Economic Strategic Policy Committee has given him first hand experience of how local government can drive enterprise development.
